Zithromax is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic from the macrolide-azalide group. The active ingredient is called azithromycin. It has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity.
The mechanism of action of azithromycin is related to inhibition of microbial cell protein synthesis. By binding to the 50S subunit of the ribosome, it suppresses protein synthesis, slowing bacterial growth and reproduction.
In high concentrations it has a bactericidal effect.
The film-coated tablets Zithromax can be taken independently of or with meals with plenty of liquid. The dosage depends on an ailment and a severity of that ailment.
For the treatment of respiratory tract infections, otitis media and skin infections, the recommended total dose for adults and adolescents weighing more than 45 kg is 1.5 grams. This dose can be taken using either the 3-day regimen or the 5-day regimen.
In uncomplicated genital infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, the total dose is prescribed in the amount of 1 gram, which is applied at once.
In the case of genital infections caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, combined therapy with ceftriaxone (250 or 500 mg) is usually prescribed. The recommended dose of Zithromax is 1 or 2 grams.
