How does it work?

Risperdal belongs to a class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics. The active substance is called risperidone. Risperidone works by affecting the amount of certain chemicals called neurotransmitters that occur naturally in the brain. It is believed that people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and autism have imbalances in certain neurotransmitters. Risperdal tablets are able to balance levels of neurotransmitters.

How is it used?

Risperdal in tablet form is taken orally. The dosage depends on a medical condition.

Treatment of schizophrenia in adults usually begins with 2 milligrams of Risperdal daily. On the 2nd day of treatment, the daily dose is increased to 4 mg. The maintenance dose is between 4 and 6 milligrams. For elderly patients, at the beginning of treatment, a dose of 0.5 mg twice a day is prescribed. This dose can be increased to 1 to 2 mg twice a day by the doctor.

For mania , the starting dose is 2 mg once a day for adults and 0.5 mg twice a day for elderly patients. The maintenance dose for adults is between 1 and 6 mg once a day, while elderly patients should take the dose of 1 to 2 mg twice a day.

When it comes to persistent aggression in people with Alzheimer's dementia , the starting dose is 0.25 mg for both adults and elderly patients. The dose should be increased gradually. The recommended dose is 0.5 mg to 1 mg twice a day. Treatment should not last longer than 6 weeks.

The dose for children with behavioral problems depends on their weight. Children weighing less than 50 kg should start treatment with 0.25 mg once a day. Every other day the dose can be increased in steps of 0.25 mg daily. The maintenance dose is between 0.25 mg and 0.75 mg once a day.

For children weighing 50 kg or more, the dose of 0.5 mg once a day is prescribed at the beginning of treatment. Every other day the dose can be increased in steps of 0.25 mg daily. The maintenance dose is 0.5 milligrams to 1.5 milligrams once a day. The treatment should not last longer than 6 weeks. Risperdal is not suitable for children under the age of 5 with conduct disorder.

What kind of medicine is Risperdal?

Risperdal (active ingredient risperidone) is an atypical neuroleptic that was originally approved for the treatment of severe and chronic schizophrenia in adults and adolescents. In addition to schizophrenia, Risperdal is used to treat manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder and for the short-term treatment of long-standing aggression associated with dementia/Alzheimer's disease or behavioral disorders in children aged 5 years and older and adolescents.

Risperidone may be prescribed "off-label" to treat the following conditions:

  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • obsessive compulsive disorder
  • depression
  • tic disorder

Risperdal is available as film-coated tablets, orodispersible tablets and oral solution.

What are the possible long-term effects of Risperdal tablets?

Long-term use of Risperdal tablets can lead to certain long-term effects. One counts among these long-term damages

  • cardiac arrhythmias,
  • weight gain,
  • increased blood sugar levels and
  • tardive dyskinesia.

Gynecomastia or male breast enlargement can be caused by taking Risperdal tablets as the drug causes prolactin levels to rise. Prolactin is a hormone that stimulates breast development, especially in children.

A 2006 study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology found that the long-term effects of Risperdal on prolactin levels were not well documented.

"Risperidone, given to adolescents in doses commonly used to treat psychotic symptoms, can greatly increase prolactin levels, which can produce gynecomastia and/or galactorrhea," the researchers said. "Since the long-term effects of antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia are not well documented, risperidone should be used with caution in children and adolescents."

How is Risperdal successfully discontinued?

In order to minimize the withdrawal symptoms, Risperdal tablets should not be discontinued abruptly, but gradually. Discontinuation should take place after consultation with the psychiatrist and according to the specific plan.

The longer a patient continues treatment with Risperdal tablets, the longer it will take to stop taking it. If this drug is used for a short period of time, stopping Risperdal may result in a withdrawal syndrome or symptoms such as restlessness.

It is possible that when reducing a small dose of this drug, you may experience mild withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms can vary from patient to patient, ranging from insomnia, restlessness, headaches to the feeling of recurring psychosis. In this case, a patient should see their treating psychiatrist and talk to them about the problems they are having.

Risperdal saved my life. I was delusional and paranoid the whole time. But since I got Risperdal 2 mg all delusions have gone and I can function like a normal person. I haven't had any side effects. Risperdal is the best antipsychotic I've tried so far (and I've tried three). I didn't gain weight with it. I don't have an increased appetite, I'm not sleepy and I'm not tired. Risperdal works well!
