How does it work?

The active substance in Prozac Fluoxetine belongs to the group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Fluoxetine works by altering the serotonin balance in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter responsible for mood and social behavior. Therefore, fluoxetine is believed to reduce the effects of depression by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.

How is it used?

Prozac is given orally with a full glass of water. It is usually taken as a single dose in the morning, with or without food. If the doctor prescribed Prozac twice a day, it should be taken in the morning and at noon.

Recommended dose for adults:

  • for depression : the recommended dose is 20 mg per day. The dose can be adjusted 3 to 4 weeks after the start of treatment. If necessary, the daily dose can be gradually increased to 60 mg daily. An improvement in the depressive symptoms can only occur after the first few weeks. The adult patients with depression should be treated for at least 6 months;

  • in bulimia : the daily dose is 60 mg;

  • for obsessive-compulsive disorder : the recommended dose is 20 mg per day. After 2 weeks of treatment, the dose is adjusted. If necessary, the dose can be gradually increased to 60 mg daily. If there is no improvement within 10 weeks, your doctor will reconsider your treatment.
