How does it work?

Prednisolone is a synthetic hormone (steroid) and an analogue of the hormone cortisol secreted by the adrenal cortex. Prednisolone used to treat various diseases.

Prednisolone acts as an immunosuppressant. The immune system protects the body from bacteria and viruses. In certain diseases, however, the immune system produces the antibodies and perceives the body's own cells as foreign bodies. This mechanism underlies autoimmune diseases.

The drug has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect and inhibits the development of symptoms of inflammation (redness, swelling, pain). Symptoms such as muscle weakness and short-term fatigue can occur when you start taking prednisolone.

How is it used?

Prednisolone tablets should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water during or immediately after a meal. Always take prednisolone exactly as your doctor has told you. The dose is set by the doctor individually and depends on the disease.

Prescribing should take into account the circadian rhythm of (GC) secretion: most of the dose (2/3) or the whole dose should be taken in the morning hours around 8:00 am and 1/3 in the evening. Weaning should be gradual.

Adults : In acute conditions and as replacement therapy, the starting dose is 20-30 mg per day. The daily maintenance dose is 5-10 mg. If needed, the initial daily dose can be around 15-100 mg and the maintenance dose can be around 5-15 mg/day.

Children : The initial daily dose is 1-2 mg/kg body weight divided into 4-6 divided doses. Daily maintenance dose is 300-600 µg/kg.

If you buy prednisolone and take it for hormone replacement therapy, then the recommended daily dose is 5-7.5 mg divided into 2 doses.

You can find more information on dosing for other diseases in the prednisolone package insert.

Prednisolone is an effective drug that helps me well. However, after a few days of taking it, I got side effects in the form of insomnia and nervousness. Recently I've been weaning again, down to 20 mg and then I have to wait and see. Depending on the results, I then have to stop prednisolone or take a basic dose.
