How does it work?

Erythromycin belongs to the group of macrolide antibiotics. Erythromycin inhibits the production of the required proteins. Without these proteins, the bacteria cannot grow, multiply and increase in number. Such inhibition eliminates the infection.

Erythromycin is a broad spectrum antibiotic, meaning it can treat the infections caused by many bacteria. However, it does not kill viruses and is not suitable for treating viral infections such as colds, flu and most cases of coughs and sore throats.

To make sure whether erythromycin can eliminate this or that bacteria, a tissue sample is taken by the doctor, e.g. B. Throat or skin swab.

How is it used?

Erythromycin tablets are taken whole before meals with a glass of water. The children can also take the tablets during meals to improve acceptance of the intake.

Dosing is related to pathogen sensitivity and disease severity.

For adolescents from the age of 14 and adults with a body weight of more than 50 kg , 1.5 - 2 g erythromycin per day are usually prescribed, corresponding to 3 - 4 erythromycin tablets 500 mg per day, divided into 3 - 4 individual doses. If patients suffer from severe infections or moderately sensitive germs, the daily dose can be doubled. The maximum daily dose for adolescents from 14 years and adults (over 50 kg body weight) is 4 g erythromycin, corresponding to 8 tablets erythromycin 500 mg per day, divided into 3 - 4 individual doses.

The recommended daily dose for children from 8 to 14 years of age (from 30 kg body weight) is around 1.5 g (1 - 2 g) erythromycin, corresponding to 3 tablets erythromycin 500 mg per day, divided into 3 individual doses.

I`ve been taking Erythromycin for almost 3 years to help with my gastroparesis and decrease intestinal transit time. Erythromycin is a fairly common drug for this condition and it works great! I have no side effects with it. I have to adjust the dose a couple of times a year, but overall I`m happy with this drug.

This drug was prescribed due to the ringworm of the body. After taking it, I quickly got side effects in the form of tiredness, nausea and hot flashes... That`s why I discontinued erythromycin.
