Atomoxetine works by increasing the activity of a brain chemical (neurotransmitter) called norepinephrine. This drug activates areas of the brain that control impulsive actions and attention, thereby improving ADHD symptoms.
How well does atomoxetine work in children and adolescents? Atomoxetine does not cure ADHD. It aims to improve functioning by reducing the key symptoms of ADHD such as inability to pay attention, impulsive behavior and hyperactivity. Atomoxetine reduces ADHD symptoms by 25% in about two-thirds of children and adolescents after 3 to 6 weeks of treatment, with full response occurring after about 3 months.
