How does it work?

Hydroxyzine works by blocking the H1 receptor and decreasing the activity of histamine . Histamine allows more fluid to flow from the capillaries into the tissues, resulting in a runny nose and watery eyes. Histamine also causes the swelling and rash formation. By inhibiting the H1 receptor, hydroxyzine reduces these allergy symptoms .

But hydroxyzine also enters the brain where it has further effects to cause drowsiness and sedation . These effects may not be desirable when treating allergies.
