The action of Aldactone pills is aimed at inhibiting the action of aldosterone. Too much aldosterone in the body causes the kidneys to retain more sodium and water, while too much potassium is excreted from the body.
Aldactone stimulates urination by increasing the elimination of excess water and salt in the body. It also lowers high arterial blood pressure. It can be used alone or with other diuretics. It improves the effectiveness of other antihypertensive medicines.
Aldactone also exerts an anti-androgenic effect by acting against male sex hormones. For this reason, Aldactone is used off-label in the treatment of female hirsutism. It works by reducing hair growth. The safety of Aldactone pills for the treatment of hirsutism in women of childbearing potential has not been established by specific studies. Your doctor may recommend combined use with oral contraceptives to ensure both regular menstrual cycles and adequate contraception.
Aldactone is taken orally, whole and with sufficient liquid. The daily dose depends on several factors. The following plays a role here:
For adults, the usual starting dose is 100-200 mg daily for 3-6 days. If necessary, the daily dose can be increased to 400 mg spironolactone.
The maintenance dose is between 50-200 mg spironolactone and can be taken daily, every 2nd or every 3rd day as required.
For children, the recommended starting dose is 3 mg/kg body weight daily for five days. If necessary, the dose is increased to 9 mg/kg body weight daily until the clinical effect occurs. The duration of treatment for children is up to 30 days.
